Installation Guide Before You Start Your Project

Installing artificial turf grass can be a daunting task if you don’t understand all the details involved with your installation. Its important to follow the right steps in the right order using the correct tools in order to achieve the best results.

Here are some general guidelines before you tackle the installation.

Don’t put the cart before the horse. Planning is the key to an outstanding result. First, determine the shape and size of the area you want to install. In general, curved (oval, kidney or even free-form) shapes look more natural that straight-edged, rectangular shapes.

Think the project through:

will you need to reserve areas for trees or other plantings?
will you need enclosed areas for a dog run, storage, or safety?
will you be adding structures, such as walls, gazebos or decks, at a later date?
Factors like these can sometimes affect the choice of material and installation method.

Do the math. Be sure to measure your installation area and do the math carefully to determine how much of each material you will need, including not only the sod, but also the aggregate base rock and infill mixture. Be sure to make accommodation for the turf’s grain pattern in your calculations. If you are unsure of your totals, give us a call and we’ll check your numbers.

Gather your tools and practice your techniques. Make sure you have all the necessary installation tools, that they are in good condition, and that you understand how to use them. Many of the larger tools, such as sod rollers and plate compactors, can be rented inexpensively from your local hardware supplier. Some of the more common items are probably already in your tool chest. Synthetic Turf Depot sells all the installation-specific tools and materials you’ll need, and we have instructional brochures and videos to help you understand the process. And we’re always here to answer any questions as they arise.

Enlist a friend and take your time. Installation and seaming are easier with two people, so ask a handy friend to help you. Most average-size DIY installation can be completed in a couple of days. Be sure to factor in preparation and drying time. And buy your buddy lunch.

Prep is the most important step. Be sure to do your groundwork so that your new turf has a compact, level (but slightly sloped) surface to lie on. This important step ensures the most attractive appearance and the most efficient drainage. Remove any rocks, roots or other obstacles from the area and check for underground cables, exposed valves or sprinkler heads. Finally, you’re ready to begin!
